Have you ever had one of those
days when nothing seems to go right? This song was inspired by an incident
with Carter & Carter's touring car, which saw a series of things
happen that could well have ended in disaster, but instead David and
Merelyn were able to see the funny side and wrote a song.
THE
STORY BEHIND THE SONG
We were coming home from a show several years ago, and after stopping to
go to the shops, we couldn't get the old 1981 Ford started. It had
done well over 300,000 kms and served us well, but was really wearing out.
David had a little 'trick' that he did to start the motor. It
involved placing a screw driver across the starter motor, causing a spark
and starting the car.
Merelyn
got out of the car to hold the bonnet up (which incidentally was missing
the stick to hold it up by itself). David put his head under the bonnet,
placed the screwdriver in the appropriate place, and sure enough the car
sparked and roared to life. Success!
Unfortunately,
the automatic gear lever was also malfunctioning, and despite it being on
the P for PARK, it was in fact in REVERSE and the car started backing down
the road with a trailer full of PA. Merelyn did the first thing she
thought of in her surprise and dropped the bonnet to chase the wayward
car. David's head was still under the bonnet! Ouch! David
reeled backwards from the blow, falling to the ground. Merelyn had a life
challenging choice to make.
Go
for the car
OR
Help David.
What did she do?
GO FOR THE CAR!! Of course. After all, David's head
would heal!
She
ran backwards with the car, and in trying to get in the door to stop the
car, discovered anew one of the characteristic of those older model
Ford cars. The shonky door handles! Yes she could not get in
the door and was forced to run alongside the car trying to get her
arm into the small crack left open in the window.
Merelyn eventually managed this and got in and stopped the car.
David in his haste to get out
and show Merelyn how to start the car, left the passenger door open,
and as we had parked next to a huge power pole, when the car rolled
backwards, the front door was slowly bent right around to the front fender
before the car came to a halt.
What
could we do? We sat in the gutter and laughed! It all seemed
so impossible. Then we went home and wrote this song. We hope you
enjoy ONE OF THOSE DAYS.
David & Merelyn are busily writing for a
new album, in between a hectic touring schedule, and
go into the studio to record the first single next week.
